Pupils put purpose and passion into helping local communities across Birmingham

Eden Boys’ School, Birmingham has once again shown its commitment to community and compassion, with pupils turning empathy into meaningful action this winter.

From raising awareness of youth homelessness to providing practical support for those in need, the school’s initiatives combined hands-on experiences, fundraising, and direct outreach, giving students the opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of vulnerable young people and families across the West Midlands.

Pupils demonstrated their compassion and commitment to tackling youth homelessness by taking part in St Basil’s Big Sleepout 2025 at Millennium Point. Braving the cold night, they experienced a small glimpse of what it is like to have no home, using cardboard boxes and plastic sheets to shield themselves from adverse weather, while raising vital funds and awareness for vulnerable young people across the West Midlands.

Building on this firsthand experience of hardship, pupils also extended their support by serving hot meals at Homeless One, Digbeth, made possible through their fundraising efforts. Serving nourishing, warming meals and providing non-perishable items to take home, they connected with the local community and ensured both hearts and stomachs were full. Involved in every step—from packing the provisions to delivering them directly—pupils turned empathy into action, demonstrating the true spirit of charity and care for those in need.

Matti Ur Rehman, Principal at Eden Boys’ School, Birmingham said:

“I am incredibly proud of our pupils for the compassion and dedication they have shown this winter. Taking part in St Basil’s Big Sleepout and supporting local charities has given them an opportunity to see the challenges faced by others, while also making a tangible difference in the community. The Winter Gift Programme allows our students to put empathy into action, and it is inspiring to see their teamwork, generosity, and sense of responsibility shine through in every initiative.”

The Winter Gift Programme is an annual campaign which sees pupils and staff from every Star Academies school unite to participate in a broad range of charitable giving, acts of kindness and volunteering; all with one simple aim – to make sure no one faces the challenges of winter alone.
